Americans Not Into Driving Anymore?

Date

September 6, 2013 by Jennifer Ghidinelli

driving-events

Last week we read an interesting article from the Associated Press that suggests that according to the latest stats from the Federal Highway Administration, American's love affair with cars is over.

Can this really be true?  Here are the stats:

  • After rising for decades, the collective miles people drive peaked in August 2007
  • During the "Great Recession" the collective miles driven dropped sharply and has plateaued ever since
  • Vehicle miles traveled during the first half of 2013 were down slightly, continuing the trend
  • Average miles per individual peaked in July 2004 at just over 900 miles per month
  • By July 2012, the average miles per individual declined 9% to 820 miles per month
  • Percentage of people in their teens, 20s and 30s with driver's licenses has been dropping significantly

So what exactly is going on here? Here's what the researchers say.

Mobile application by Torqued Racing

Date

June 11, 2013 by admin

One of our customers, Torqued Racing Solutions, has been quickly putting together a mobile application to scratch an itch. In owner Shawn Fultz's words:

We were looking for a way to access our MotorsportReg.com event registration information on the go and at the track. We couldn't find anything on the market so we built it!

The application is in beta right now and supports the following features:

  • View registrations for any event

  • View driver and vehicle information

  • View/enter notes for driver or other meetings

  • Check in drivers (Note: at the moment, this is local to the app and not a feature of MSR, but is something we're working on)

  • Download data from MotorsportReg.com so that it will work offline

Check out a quick video:

This is not a Pukka Software or MotorsportReg.com product so we can't take any official credit nor provide support for it. However, we're working with Shawn so that he has the necessary tools from us to build something great using our REST API. We're really excited about his work!

July Uptime

Date

June 11, 2013 by Brian Ghidinelli

We use Pingdom as our primary uptime monitoring tool. Although we use two other systems to ensure that Pingdom is correct, it has the best reports and most accuracy. We receive notifications if our servers go offline for even a minute so we can jump in the batmobile and spring into action. Thankfully, most of the time we just sit around, sipping pina coladas with little paper umbrellas. Unfortunately, some of our competitors are not quite so lucky; here's the report for July 2011:

July 2011 website uptime comparison between MotorsportReg.com and two competitors

Everyone will experience downtime at some point, but the question is whether this is a chronic problem and fundamental shortcoming or if it is an extraordinary, unusual event?

Here's a report going back to April of 2007 (4.25 years) on the three sites listed above in the same order:

SiteOutagesUptime %
Site #116399.56%
MotorsportReg.com999.99%
Site #39999.74%

Knocking on wood over here, we are very proud of this record. It's the result of our investment in infrastructure, people and services. Although this uptime isn't recognized like a new feature or updated design, it is every bit as important and we want to say thanks to the people who keep us running shiny side up.

HPDE Insurance Program Update

Date

June 11, 2013 by Brian Ghidinelli

Over the past 18 months, the HPDE Insurance Program has become a big hit with the HPDE enthusiast community. With over 3,000 policies sold, it is clear that enthusiasts want affordable coverage while they are participating in HPDE events and the HPDE Insurance Program meets that need.

The HPDE Insurance Program offers affordable, single-event coverage to enthusiasts participating in structured driving events. These policies are only offered to "approved" driving events, and the program is endorsed by both BMW CCA and PCA. If you aren't sure if your events are approved, contact Lockton Affinity (the program administrator) to take the necessary steps to get approved.

This program was formed by Ryan Staub at Lockton Affinity with our assistance here at MotorsportReg; this truly is a program designed by enthusiasts for enthusiasts. Throughout the design, both the individual enthusiast's and the event organizer's needs were considered. From a participant's perspective, the single-event structure is very appealing to the driver that participates in less than 6 events per year. The ability to add a second covered driver at no additional charge, the "stated value" policy with the option to cover modifications, and the ease of purchasing coverage online in just a few minutes are all very appealing. As an HPDE instructor, I take comfort in knowing that the policy covers me if I'm asked to drive their car too.

Approval from the HPDE Insurance Program lends credibility to the safety and structure of an event organizer's driving events. This can be used as a great marketing tool to separate your program from non-instructed, loosely-run track days. Event organizers that include information about this insurance program in their event pre-registration materials consistently report increased attendance in their events. For the driver that is on the fence about attending an event, knowing that they can obtain affordable single-event insurance for the event can often help to nudge them over the fence.

Visit http://hpdeinsuranceprogram.com and click the "Apply Online" link to confirm if your upcoming event is listed. If not, contact Lockton at hpdeins@locktonaffinity.com to get your event added. In a time where many event organizers struggle to gain the necessary registrations to put on a profitable event, this is a free tool that benefits your participants and can help encourage participation.

97% disappointed without MotorsportReg.com

Date

June 11, 2013 by Brian Ghidinelli

We ran a customer survey in June of this year and I have spent a few minutes looking over the results again this morning. There is one particular response that I am especially proud of:

Organizers would feel sad without us

96.8% of our customers, whether on our free or paid plans, would be disappointed if they couldn't use MotorsportReg.com. This means we're delivering on our promise to make volunteers even more awesome at their jobs by making it easier and more fun to organize and attend events.

We don't take this as carte blanche to put down the keyboard and ride off into the sunset though. In fact, since June we've rolled out a bevy of big-iron features like post-event registration editing, membership validation and surveys/elections. But we do take this as a compliment. And for that, we just want to say, we love you too. :)
